Police say financial problems might be the reason

A police constable attached to Bhoiwada police station in Bhiwandi committed suicide in his quarters at Wagle Estate, Thane. Police sources say financial worries could have been the reason for him to take the drastic step.

The deceased has been identified as Kamlakar Gangurde, 45, a resident of Police Line, Wagle Estate, Thane. Though the incident took place sometime after 6 p.m on Saturday, the matter came to light at about only at 1pm on Sunday.

Sub inspector PD Borate performed the panchanama and sent the body to the civil hospital for autopsy.

It is learnt that Gangurde, who was earlier attached with Thane Traffic branch, was transferred to the Bhoiwada police station in 2004. However, he barely worked there as he met with an accident and had to go on long leave. Gangurde was on sick leave since July 2006 after his brother died in a railway accident.

Gangurde was alone in the quarters when the incident took place. His family — wife Meena and two daughters Swati ,22,  and Deepa ,14, — had gone to Nashik. A letter dated May 17 was recovered from the house. However, the investigators refused to divulge about the details of its contents. It is learnt that Gangurde, a black belt holder in karate, did not talk often with other residents. Gangurde, who was not on duty for the last 10 months, is learnt to be under severe financial crisis. Further investigations are on.
