Man smuggled memory chips in a soft drink can

Mohammed Alam, who arrived from Dubai, has allegedly tried an inventive way to smuggle memory chips out of  the Chhatrapati Shivaji international airport at Sahar. He stuffed chips worth Rs22.40 lakh in a soft drink can. But Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) officials of the Customs succeeded in detecting the 717 pieces he was carrying.  

Sources said that the incident took place on May 18 when Mohammed Alam came by Oman Air flight. During preliminary investigations, it was revealed that he had visited Dubai various times, but brought only readymade garments.

This was the first time he brought the imported electronic goods in huge quantities, police said.

Alam said he was a mere carrier of the goods on behalf of one Hanif from Dubai. All he would have got was Rs5000 when he delivered the goods to a person of Hanifbhai in Mumbai when former was to call him on his (Alam’s) mobile. Alam was remanded in judicial custody till June 2, by the additional chief metropolitan magistrate’s court at Esplanade on Saturday.
