ISLAMABAD: Acting under intelligence reports that the family members of the slain personal staff officer to the suspended chief justice of the Supreme Court are seriously contemplating to name the Pakistani President in the murder case of Hamad Raza, President Pervez Musharraf deemed it fit on Saturday — a week after the assassination to give a telephone call to the widow of the deceased and condole the murder.

Hamad was a prime defence witness in the presidential disqualification reference against Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry besides being the PSO to the suspended top judge. Though Islamabad police is not yet clear whether it was a dacoity—cum—murder case or a target killing, Raza’s family members say he fell victim to an incident of target killing at the behest of the agencies who wanted him to side with the government in the presidential reference against the chief justice.

Hamad Raza’s widow Shabana reportedly told Justice Iftikhar after the murder that the killers came around 4:30 am, shot him and ran away. If it was a case of dacoity, then why didn’t the killers take away the expensive gold bangles I was wearing?

According to Aitzaz Ahsan, the defence counsel for the suspended judge, Raza was under pressure and picked up twice by the intelligence agencies. He told a full bench of the Supreme Court on Thursday that the intelligence agencies were asking him to provide them with details like the number of plots the chief justice has.

The acting Chief Justice of Pakistan Rana Bhagwandas has already appointed two senior Supreme Court judges to supervise the police investigation.
