KOLKATA: Trinamool Congress Chief Mamata Banerjee on Sunday condemned the police action on a law violation programme by the Krishi Jami Raksha Committee, spearheading an anti-land acquisition movement, at Singur in Hooghly district where a Tata Motors small car project is coming up.

"I have never seen such a huge police force controlling a movement by some villagers. Also I wonder why such a huge force will remain at the site of Tata Motors project," the Trinamool chief said.

Banerjee also wanted to know if a boundary wall of the project site was more valuable than the lives of people.

"While land-losers are starving on one side, the state government is spending over Rs 3.5 lakh a day for police protection on the other side," she alleged.

Mamata observed that the incident was the result of a total failure of the administration and the state government.

Union Parliamentary Affairs and Information and Broadcasting Minister Priyaranjan Dasmunshi also condemned the incident, saying the incident took place at a time when an initiative had been taken for an all-party peace meeting for restoration of normalcy at the trouble-torn Nandigram in East Midnapore.

"This perhaps indicates that the CPI (M) and the chief minister do not want such an all-party peace meeting," Dasmunshi observed.

The Trinamool chief, however, assured that the incident would not affect the peace process.

But having said that she accused the state government of using brutal police force to stop farmers' movement and felt "this kind of police brutality would not resolve the conflict".

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee said at Nakashipara in Nadia district today that the police had to take action after the protestors approached the fencing of the Tata Motors project.
