18 killed, 30 injured in Shillong bus mishap

Eighteen people were killed and nearly 30 injured when a bus overturned and fell into a gorge in East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya late Friday night.

SHILLONG: Eighteen people were killed and nearly 30 injured when a bus overturned and fell into a gorge in East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya late Friday night, police sources said.

The driver lost control over the bus while overtaking an autorickshaw and hit a vehicle coming from the opposite direction before plunging into the gorge near Mawkajem village, police said.

The overcrowded bus was on its way to Tynriang village from Shillong.

Three persons died on Friday while 15 people succumbed to their injuries on Saturday, sources said.

The injured have been admitted to Pynursia Public Health Centre and Shillong Civil Hospital.
