TIRUCHIRAPPALLI: Abolition of domestic roaming charges imposed by various telecom service providers was under consideration, Union minister for IT and Communications, A Raja said on Saturday.

Talking to reporters at the airport here, Raja said discussions were still on in this regard, as committed by his predecessor Dayanidhi Maran.

Maran had promised to implement waiver of roaming charges as a 'gift to the nation' on June 3 to coincide with the birthday of his grand-uncle and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi.

As per estimates, this would collectively take away Rs 4000 crore from the various operators.

On a query about the chances of bringing Chennai telephone services under the Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL), he said such policy decisions could not be taken in a haste.

"Such decisions could not be taken just like that, as after all it has been hardly four days since I assumed the new office", he said.

Raja was on his first visit to his Perambalur constituency after taking charge of the IT and Communications portfolio.
