While the pawns of the ’93 blasts conspiracy await their punishment after conviction, as many as 37 key accused are still absconding. DNA profiles the missing kingpins of the conspiracy:

Dawood Ibrahim Kaskar
Named as the main accused in the ’93 blasts case, the 46-year-old don masterminded the blasts to avenge the killings of Muslims during the 1992-93 riots after the destruction of the Babri Masjid. He shipped RDX to the sprawling coastline of Raigad district and arranged for the cargo to be unloaded, transported and stored in safe houses. Despite repeated requests by the Indian government, Pakistani authorities have refused to extradite him.

Tiger Memon
Seething after his office was gutted in the riots, Ibrahim Memon alias Tiger, hatched the plan to bomb Mumbai to make a world-wide impact. Tiger was known as a brute among the city’s underworld. From being a delivery boy of smuggled goods, he became a gold smuggler. The RDX-loaded vehicles used in the blasts were packed in his garage at Mahim. He and his family left the city the night before the blasts.
He later shifted base to Karachi.

Anees Ibrahim Kaskar
Dawood’s younger brother Anees played the role of coordinator in the conspiracy. He arranged the delivery of weapons like AK-56 rifles and pistols to several people, including actor Sanjay Dutt. Anees also sent Muslim youth to Pakistan via Dubai for a crash course in the use of weapons and explosives. He currently shuttles between Dubai and Karachi to help manage his brother’s business empire.

Mohammad Dossa
In the early 80s, the Dossa brothers — Mohammed, Abdulla and Mustafa — sold smuggled goods in Manish Market. They later joined the Dawood gang and became smugglers. Enjoying his clout, they threatened old-time smugglers like Yusuf Patel and purchased his properties at throwaway prices. The brothers left for Dubai after the blasts. However, Mustafa, who is ill, returned after being deported from Dubai. His trial has been separated from the main trial.

Other absconders:
Javed Chikna, Yeda Yakub, Taher Taklya, Ayub Memon and Anwar Theba.
