Police are trying to find out how the Navy sailor got hold of the sophisticated firearm

The MIDC police investigating the murder of 24-year-old software professional Kausambi Layek in a hotel room on Monday is trying to find out how Manish Thakur, the prime suspect, got the firearm, which was used to kill Kausambi.

“Manish was positioned as a ‘sailor’ in the Navy. According to the Naval laws, a person who is posted as a ‘sailor’ is not allowed to carry a firearm. This means that Manish got the firearm from elsewhere. Also, the firearm used is not available in the market. It is a sophisticated weapon used only in defence services,” Additional Commissioner of Police Bipin Bihari said.

Initially, the police thought that Manish was authorised to carry a weapon. But after having spoken to Naval authorities they came to know that Manish was a sailor and not a ‘senior sailor’. And sailors are not provided with any weapons.

The priority is to recover the gun and find out how Manish got hold of it. An investigating officer  said Manish couldn’t have taken the weapon out of the naval premises without being noticed. “If there is evidence that there was connivance from another person, we will take suitable action,” the officer said.

Another aspect of the investigation, which is baffling the police, is that Manish after the alleged murder left all his belongings in the same room and fled. The police recovered his shoes, clothes, bags, a chopper from the scene of the crime.

“Normally, when a person commits a murder he tries to erase all evidence which will lead the police to him. But in this case, the suspect has left all his belongings behind,” the officer said. Also, immediately after the alleged murder Manish went to Goa. “Even here, a person would flee to a place where he is not likely to be traced. But Manish went directly to his place of posting, making it easier for the police to trace him,” he said.

As to what action the Navy would take against Manish, a defence personnel said, “Till the person is found guilty, he continues to be on the same post. But if the court convicts him, there is a parallel enquiry by the administration. The action could range from suspension to dismissal.”

Bipin Bihari said the Navy had handed Manish over to the MIDC police team. “They are likely to reach Mumbai on Friday. Manish will be produced before the Metropolitan Magistrate’s court in Andheri.”
