Four members of the family, including 50-year-old patriarch, struggle for nearly half an hour to keep the robbers armed with stones and boulders from entering their Belapur residence

In times when dacoits are striking at will, a Belapur-based Sikh family struggled, fought and in the end thwarted an effort to loot their house.

Driven by sheer valour and unity, the family members chased away the group of 20 men — armed with stones, boulders and poles — who tried their level best to force themselves into the Bhullar residence. But the Bhullar men, aided by their women, managed not only to give the robbers a chase but their timely action also helped the police get hold of two of the dacoits.

Listening to the valiant resistance of the Bhullar family, an evidence of divine intervention is certainly discernible. “Normally papaji (50-year-old patriarch Sarabjit) doesn’t wake up quickly, but on that particular night, he was quick on his feet and  rushed to the door even before I could realise what was happening,” Sarabjit’s wife Balvinder Kaur (45) said.

It is certainly our Guru’s hand that foiled the dacoits’ attempt, she added.

“When Baljeet claimed that he was falling, I reminded him that we would be killed once the dacoits manage to enter the house,” Balvinder said.

“The gang may be involved in the recent robberies at Thane (rural) and city,” DCP Amar Jadhav said.

“Our Guru fought invaders, we only followed in his footsteps,” said Sarabjit Singh as he nursed his wound.

For the Bhullar family, the ordeal started at 3am on Tuesday. Despite having suffered beatings and sustaining injuries at the hands of dacoits, the Bhullars are happy that they collectively foiled the dacoits’ plan.

While the dacoits, nearly 20 in number, were successful in looting Rs2 lakh worth of valuables and cash from Manjula Mehta and her sister’s house in Sector 8A, they were stopped in their step by the stiff resistance meted out by the Bhullars living at Girikunj society in Sector 8B. Two persons have been arrested. A Navi Mumbai police team is in Jalna for further probe. The victims said the dacoits numbered around 25, while the police claimed it was around 15.

While Sarabjit said “it was all because of the Sikh Guru Gobind Singh that the family was able to fight off dacoits”.
