NEW DELHI: A 35-year-old Roman Catholic priest was shot in mysterious circumstances by unidentified men in New Delhi on Tuesday afternoon. Such an incident is a first for the capital.

Police said two unidentified men entered the premises of St. Vincent Palloti Primary School and shot Father George Phillip. Officials said the men tried to rob him of his mobile phone and when Phillip resisted they shot at him, hitting his upper left chest.

“We received a call from the school authorities around 12:30 pm and they informed us of the incident,” said a senior police official investigating the case. The school is located in Sangam Vihar area in south Delhi, one of the posh residential areas of the capital.

Rubbishing the investigations of the police, Dr. Dominic Emmanuel, spokesperson of Delhi Catholic Archdiocese said, “Police are being very naïve to say that the attack was carried because the men wanted to rob Father George of a mobile phone. Why would someone who wants to rob a person of his mobile carry a gun inside a school?” He further added, “The men were carrying a country made pistol and fired three shots at the Father. His condition is stable now.”

Emmanuel went on to reveal that one of the attackers had come to meet Father George on Monday to find out about the admission criteria. Fr. George had asked the man to come with the child on Tuesday. “Initially we suspected that the attack was the handy work of Hindu fundamentalists but after talking to the school staff we have found no evidence to say so,” said Emmanuel.
