Japanese govt honours Dr Manmohan Singh

NEW DELHI: Japan on Friday conferred Dr Manmohan Singh, known for his work in the field of treatment of tuberculosis, with one of the country's top decorations.

Singh was honoured with the 'Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette' in recognition of his outstanding contribution to promotion of friendly relations between Japan and India.

The decoration has been conferred upon the doctor by the Emperor of Japan, His Majesty Akihito.

Japanese Ambassador Yasukuni Enoki hosted a ceremony at his residence here today for the presentation of the decoration.

Singh completed his MBBS from the King George College, Lucknow, after which he worked in various capacities in Delhi hospitals and has contributed a lot to the control of tuberculosis.

For his meritorious services, he was conferred a lifetime achievement award in 2001 by Bihar government and in 2003 by Delhi government.
