Uttar Pradesh, India's most populous state

NEW DELHI: Uttar Pradesh, which is set to have a new government soon, is the most populous state in India with a population of 166 million.

The state has an area of 236,286 sq km. It has a sex ratio of 898 females per 1,000 men and a literacy rate of 56.3 per cent.

The main languages in the state are Hindi, Urdu and Punjabi.

With Lucknow for a capital, the state has 70 districts. The state sends 80 legislators to the Lok Sabha.

Uttar Pradesh has a bicameral legislature - Vidhan Sabha (the lower house) and Vishan Parishad (the upper house). The state assembly has 403 seats, out of which 89 are reserved for the scheduled castes.
