AHMEDABAD: Seeking evidence of the remains of Kausarbi, wife of fake encounter victim Sohrabuddin Sheikh, Gujarat CID (crime) on Sunday conducted a detailed excavation in a huge bungalow of arrested IPS officer DG Vanzara at his village Ilol, about 100km from here, amidst tight security.

The CID (crime), assisted by forensic experts, are understood to have shifted through a huge mound of dug-up earth in a farm behind Vanzara's bungalow in Sabarkantha district to find any remains or clues regarding Kausarbi's body disposal, source said adding the digging work was over.

The digging work was conducted largely in and around an abandoned well in the farm, they said.

The particular spot was dug up because Rubabuddin, brother of the fake encounter victim, had specifically said in his application to the Supreme Court that he feared that his sister-in-law was killed by Vanzara's team and then dumped into the well behind his property.

Investigating officials of the CID (crime) have refused to speak on the findings of the excavation.

Mediapersons, who camped at Ilol after knowing of the CID teams's presence, were kept by security forces at arms length from the digging site and bore the brunt of locals of the village and Vanzara's community who pelted stones at the vehicles of the scribes.

According to a top CID source, a few lower rung officials of police were involved in disposing off her body and they are absconding.

The CID already has got a lot of evidence against the IPS officers, DG Vanzara, Rajkumar Pandian and Dinesh Kumar MN, and certain other officials of Gujarat and Rajasthan police regarding the fake encounter of Sohrabuddin on November 26, 2005 on the outskirts of Ahmedabad.

Now the focus of the team probing their actions is to find any evidence of Kausarbi's death and the manner in which her body was disposed off.

Naming Vanzara as the `main conspirator' in the fake encounter case, the CID source said that a dummy run of Sohrabuddin's killing was recreated and it indicated the incident was a staged one.

This is the first time that the probe team is doing digging work near Vanzara's house even though they had raided and searched there previously for any clues to the case.
