The three IPS officers arrested in connection with the Sohrabuddin fake encounter case were remanded to police custody till May 8.

AHMEDABAD: The three IPS officers arrested in connection with the Sohrabuddin fake encounter case were on Saturday produced before the Metropolitan Court here which extended their police custody by three days till May 8.
The Gujarat CID, the agency probing the case, also filed an application seeking the court's nod to conduct narco-analysis tests on the officers, Border Range DIG DG Vanzara, Superintendent of Police of Gujarat Intelligence Bureau Rajkumar Pandian and SP of Alwar (Raj) Dineshkumar MN.
The CID had sought extension of police custody by seven days for the officers on the ground that they need to find out more details about the murder of Kausar Bi, the wife of Sohrabuddin.
Earlier, the three were brought to the court amidst tight security at around 10 am.
A group of people gathered outside the court shouted slogans in favour of Vanzara. His family members were also in the court premises to hear the proceedings.
Moving the remand application, the CID said they want further custody of the tainted officers to find out more details about the murder of Kausar Bi and the manner in which her body was disposed off.
The agency told the court that considering the gravity of the crime, they needed more time to carry out investigations.
More so when the accused were high-profile police officers with considerable clout and hence the motive of the crime and its modus operandi need to be investigated, they told the court.
Throughout the court proceedings, Vanzara looked calm and composed, while the other two officers appeared uneasy and tense and were seen talking to each other.
The CID had arrested the three officers on April 24 after they were called for questioning by the agency's DIG Rajnish Rai.
The IPS officers, who had thought it was going to be just a routine inquiry, where taken aback when Rai told them they have been placed under arrest.
Sheikh, an alleged extortionist, was killed in a fake encounter near here on November 26, 2005 and branded by the police as an militant of Pakistan-based Lashker-e-Taiba. He had several criminal cases pending against him.
The probe in the case started after Sheikh's brother moved the Supreme Court alleging he was killed in a fake encounter.
The apex court on May 3 gave the Gujarat Government two weeks time to file the final status report in the case.
