FAIZABAD: Two BSP workers carrying firearms were on Thursday night arrested from a local hotel where Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, in the thick of campaign for Uttar Pradesh assembly polls, was staying.

He was reportedly camping in the hotel to campaign for the seventh and final phase of UP elections slated for May 8.

The workers identified as P C Jatav and Sangram Jatav, were apprehended by the Special Protection Group (SPG) personnel guarding Gandhi who checked in at the Krishna Palace hotel after the day's electioneering, police sources said.

They said a revolver and a pistol, both licensed, were seized from the duo from Ghaziabad who had gone to Bikapur assembly constituency, about 36km from here, for campaigning for BSP nominee Jeetender Singh Bablu there.

Rahul Gandhi was staying in the top floor of the hotel where his entourage had booked 35 rooms.

The SPG personnel handed over the two BSP workers to local police which interrogated the duo.

The hotel is jointly owned by Ashok Singh, the BSP candidate from Rudauli assembly constituency in Barabanki district, and his brother Nirankar Singh.

After the arrest, sources said, Rahul Gandhi has been shifted to the residence of Ayodhya's raja V P Mishra.

District Magistrate Amod Kumar said the two BSP workers had been staying in the hotel since April 27.

He said both have been taken into custody by Kotwali police and interrogated.

BSP spokesman Sudhir Goel said P C Jatav and Sangram Jatav were his party workers and they had not stayed in the hotel to create security problem for Rahul Gandhi.
