NEW DELHI: A man was shot at near the high-security residence of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday afternoon, triggering panic around the area.

The man identified as Kishori Lal, a resident of Dwarka, was found injured outside the Jaipur Polo Ground, across the Prime Minister's residence, official sources said.

Lal, who has been rushed to Ram Manohar Lohia hospital, suffered a bullet injury on right side of his chest. Police suspected it to be a case of personal enmity, the sources said.

The firing took place in the Jaipur Polo Ground across the road from the PM's house around 3 p.m., police said. According to sources, four rounds were fired.

A police control room van positioned at an adjacent petrol pump rushed to the spot, after a passerby informed the police about a person being shot at near the polo ground, and shifted the injured man to the hospital.

They found an abandoned Maruti Zen car with some cash and a pistol in it at the scene of crime.

It was not immediately clear whether the car belonged to the assailants or the victim, the sources said.

Meanwhile, security agencies have rushed to the area to make an on-the-spot assessment of the situation.

There were reports that the man could have been shot elsewhere along the road but had collapsed near the Jaipur Pole ground, the sources said.

A clear picture would emerge after Lal, who is stated to be in a serious condition gives his statement to the police.
