Addressing an election rally at Kutwa, Singh claimed that the BJP government led by Kalyan Singh was "the best the state has seen in the last 20 years".
ALLAHABAD: Coming down heavily on Uttar Pradesh's ruling Samajwadi Party, the BJP on Monday said a government that could not provide security and basic amenities to its people had no right to stay in power.
"What has the Mulayam Singh Yadav government given to its people? Surely, the answer would be in the negative if we ask about electricity, water, availability of seeds and fertilisers to farmers and employment for the youth. But the answer would be a resounding yes if we ask whether the government has given you fear, insecurity and crime," BJP President Rajnath Singh said.
Addressing an election rally at Kutwa, near here, Singh claimed that the BJP government led by Kalyan Singh was "the best the state has seen in the last 20 years" and promised that if voted to power, the party will "provide an administration that was sensitive to the people's needs, yet not wary of taking bold steps on matters of principle".
Citing the example of his own Chief Ministership, Singh said his sensitivity towards the people led to his decision, to provide electricity to the remotest villages during night "so that the people can sleep peacefully and their children are not compelled to study in the dim light of lanterns".
"However, we took stern decisions as well. During my tenure as the education minister, I brought the anti-copying law prohibiting use of unfair means during examinations, which drew flak from various quarters but we stuck to our guns," Singh said.
Hailing party's Chief Ministerial candidate Kalyan Singh as "a better administrator than even I was", the BJP President appealed to the people to repose their trust in the party "so that once again the state gets benefit from the brilliant administration which it saw in 1991".
He also declared that if voted to power, the BJP would "break the spine of anti-socials, give loans to farmers on low interest rates and bring special schemes for the girl child".
Singh attacked the BSP, with which his party had shared power in the state twice, "for changing its slogan from 'Bahujan' to 'Sarvajan' in an attempt to fool the people of those caste groups which do not form its vote-bank".
"BSP supremo Mayawati might change her slogans, but I urge the voters to remember that no regime, which does not care for your self-respect, can do any good to you," he said.
Singh took a dig at BSP having reportedly given tickets to its candidates in exchange for money. "Is it a party ticket or some bus, train or cinema ticket that can be bought and sold. A party which has such low morals can never put a check on corruption".
The BJP President pointed out that both Mulayam Singh Yadav and Mayawati were facing corruption charges "and could be sent to jail any day" and wondered "how they have the temerity to face the people with such a tarnished record".
"If I had a single scar on my reputation I would have quit politics immediately," he added.
