AHMEDABAD: Driven into a corner, the Gujarat government may have admitted to the Supreme Court only on Friday that Kausarbi “may also have been killed”. But sources in Gujarat police claim that the CID has known for quite some time now the exact chronology of when, where and why Kausarbi, wife of Sohrabuddin Shiekh, and the other accomplice Tulsiram Prajapati disappeared.

Sohrabuddin was killed in a fake encounter by the then director of anti-terrorist squad DG Vanzara, and his wife Kausarbi who was witness to the killing had later disappeared.

Corroborating this hypothesis, RK Bansal the lawyer of Sohrabuddin’s brother Rubabuddin told DNA on Friday that the Gujarat government has arrested the erring IPS officers only to avert a CBI inquiry.

“The matter is very sensitive now. The biggest question is if the CID investigating officer can admit before the court that Kausarbi may also have been killed, since SC had demanded that she be produced as a witness. If the CID knew that Kausarbi was also killed, irrespective of Sohrabuddin encounter, why weren’t Vanzara, and company arrested?” he said.

Different versions of her death, that of Kausarbi being burnt alive or being strangulated by Vanzara are doing the rounds. Her body was found in a village well and the villagers had fished it out and cremated it.

Kausarbi was allegedly killed because she threatened to drag Vanzara to court, while Prajapati was allowed to get away on the condition that he would not blow the lid on him. However, he was also killed in another fake encounter in Ambaji, when the Supreme Court asked to review the Sohrabuddin murder.

Sources said Kausarbi could have been physically and mentally tortured before being killed. According to some statements video recorded by CID she was even raped. CID later also found that the well in which Kausarbi’s dead body was dumped, was covered with mud when investigations in the matter started.

Besides top politicos intending to create a fear psychosis, another hypothesis abounding is that Sohrabuddin was murdered at the behest of marble traders in Rajasthan.  They reportedly used the help of some senior BJP leaders to send him to Gujarat, where he could be killed in a fake encounter.

Sources said it suited Gujarat politicians, who wanted to use encounters to create an impression that the state and its chief minister are the target of terror attacks, to create a fear psychosis among its Hindu vote bank.

By killing alleged terrorists in encounters they wanted to show that they were snuffing out Muslim militant activity in the state, sources said.
