NASHIK: Long hours of load shedding have made life unbearable for people in Nashik. With the mercury level rising, frequent power cuts have put curbs in the day-to-day functioning of institutions during peak hours.

Students of the Minimum Competency Vocational Course (MCVC) and those of the electrical department in NSC Science College are literally stranded as they are unable to do their job training owing to inordinate power cuts. Following this, a survey has been undertaken by the students on the use of power for domestic reasons.

“From what we read in the media, there are no chances of immediate power generation. The only way is to conserve available power. We’ve asked the students to visit various families to give suggestions on maximum economic use of power,” said SS Lavekar, principal of NSC Science College.

The survey would be conducted between April 1 and 30 and every student will cover 50 houses, visiting 2 families every day. Twenty four students will thus cover 1,200 residences. Among various details, there would be an inspection of how many tube lights, fans, electric heaters, kitchen appliances and other electrical gadgets are being used in each house. The students will also discuss on the habits of energy use and accordingly, they will suggest measures for economic and efficient use of energy in their houses.

“The students have been oriented to undertake such a survey. They will suggest financial and non-financial ways to conserve energy. If the measures are followed, we are sure that 25 per cent energy per house will be saved,” said Professor Jayant Bhabe, who is in-charge of the project. The survey is being done with cooperation from NGOs like Jagruti and Eco Urja of Kripa Steel Industries.
