His followers had thrashed North Indian job seekers who came to the city for interviews with the Central Railway four years ago. His recent comments against Biharis created a stir in the political circle. So it came as no surprise that Raj Thackeray, president, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), was present at the music release function of a Marathi film, titled Mumbai Amchich (Mumbai is only ours), on Wednesday.

What startled many was Thackeray explaining why the ‘Marathi Manoos’ lagged behind when it came to securing jobs in the city.

“It is fact that influx from other states is eating into local jobs, but at the same time, Marathi people need to get aggressive to survive the competition. We can’t blame the non-Marathis if we lose out to them for lack of competitive spirit. We need to have the zeal to excel,” he said. Asked if he subscribed to the views propagated by the film, Thackeray said that he hadn’t seen it.

Written, directed and produced by Sharad Bansode, Mumbai Amchich is the story of a city police officer, who is hassled by the influx of migrants. The protagonist, played by Bansode himself, forms a group which goes on to eliminate everyone ‘anti-Marathi’.

“With so-many non-Maharashtrians coming into the city, life has become tough for the locals. My film is a wake-up call to all Maharashtrians have been pushed on the backfoot by the migrants,” Bansode said. “It will also expose the exploitation at railway recruitment examinations, admission quota at educational institutions and the scarcity of resources and urban settlements.”

The film, which was initially denied a censor certificate for its “explosive and inflammatory content”, is finally ready for release. Both Thackeray and Bansode felt that there would be no law and order problem following the release of Mumbai Amchich.

Bansode is a practising lawyer from Solapur and claims to have no political leanings. “I made this film only because I simply could not stand the messy situation of Mumbai,” he said.
