Pravin Mahajan had threatened his brother Pramod when the late BJP leader refused to meet his demand of Rs1 crore a few days before he shot him last year, Pramod’s wife Rekha, a key witness in the murder case, told a sessions court on Tuesday.

Rekha alleged that on April 22, 2006, Pravin had come to their Worli residence and demanded Rs1 crore from his elder brother and when Pramod refused to accede to the demand, he allegedly warned the BJP leader that the refusal would cost him dear.

Since the murder on April 22, 2006, Rekha has been silent about the motive for the murder. She also admitted that she had mentioned the incident to Gopinath Munde before the murder. Rekha volunteered this new information to the court when defence advocate Harshad Ponda asked her whether Pravin had hurt her when she pushed him out of her flat after the murder.

She answered in the negative and said that while being pu8shed out of the house Pravin kept saying, “you did not listen to what I said, so now bear the consequences”.

Rekha was being cross-examined by defence counsel Harshad Ponda when she stated that after firing shots at Pramod, Pravin pushed her back when she was trying to turn him out of the house.

In her re-examination by prosecutor Ujwal Nikam, Rekha alleged that that a few days prior to the incident, Pravin had come to their South Mumbai house and demanded the money from Pramod.

The new story put forward by the prosecution witness was recorded as part of the evidence after much legal wrangling. However, the probative value of the unexpected tale will be decided in the final stages of the case.

Rekha revealed in her cross examination that both, her husband and son Rahul held Arms’ licences. Pramod owned a revolver. However, she kept the licence at Delhi and the same were not with her at the time of the testimony.

Judge Davare will continue hearing the case on Wednesday morning. “We have only examined four out of the fifty-eight witnesses yet,” said Nikam.
