DHAKA: Former pacer Aaqib Javed is keen to take over as Pakistan's new cricket coach and feels his experience of having worked with most of the curent crop of players makes him a front-runner for the job.
Here as coach of the visiting Pakistan Cricket Academy team, Aaqib has the support of former captains Imran Khan and Wasim Akram and seems a clear favourite for the coach's job even though the names of Intikhab Alam, Mudassar Nazar and Javed Miandad are also doing the rounds.
"When I started my coaching career with the under-15 team, my aim was to gradually improve my position. Now more than eighty per cent players, Kamran Akmal, Shoaib Malik, Umar Gul, Mohammad Asif, are in the team with whom I have worked.
So I can claim the job," Aaqib was quoted as saying in 'The Daily Star'.
Imran recently pointed out that under Aaqib, Pakistan had won two youth World Cups and the former player, a veteran of 22 tests and 163 ODIs, was an ideal candidate for the job.
Aaqib, meanwhile, felt that Bangladesh coach Dav Whatmore did not do the right thing by expressing his desire to coach Team India in the middle of the World Cup.
"He should not have said this. When you are in charge of a team and especially involved in a big event, a coach should put his heart and soul behind the team. I understand that everybody needs money but like doctors and teachers, coaching is also a different kind of profession where ethics is very important. Being the Bangladesh coach, he should have not expressed his desire for other jobs openly. He can negotiate it personally," Aaqib said.
Aaqib felt Bangladesh's splendid show in the World Cup was an outcome of a good system.
