NEW DELHI: The Congress party’s summer of woes continue. Barely a month after losing power in Punjab and Uttrakhand, the party lost its hold on the Municipal Corporation of Delhi on Saturday as voters in the Capital voted overwhelmingly for the BJP.
In addition to the rout, the results could not have come at a worse juncture for the Congress party. The rout in Delhi is bound to dent the party’s morale on the eve of the assembly elections in neighbouring Uttar Pradesh, where the party is struggling to retain a foothold. Conversely, it will also come as huge shot in the arm of the BJP, both in UP as well as at the national level.
More than the loss of the MCD, it is the impact of the results on the overall political scene that is worrying the Congress party’s political managers. The party was yet to recover from the loss of its state governments in Punjab and Uttrakhand and now the latest rout is bound to add to the atmosphere of gloom in the party.
For the record, Congress leaders were putting up a brave front and dismissing the MCD results as a localised phenomenon. Privately, most of them have begun to
despair that the momentum is now shifting towards the BJP and the perception that is fast gaining ground amongst the public is that the saffron party is now on its
way back.
What Congressmen fear is that this impression will get further reinforced after the Gujarat assembly elections, which even die-hard faithfuls concede still remains very much in the control of the BJP.
