NEW DELHI: A jubilant BJP on Saturday termed the results of the elections to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) a referendum on the performance of the Congress government in the capital and demanded Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit's resignation.

"This was a referendum on the performance of the Sheila Dikshit government. She should now resign," Delhi BJP President Harsh Vardhan said.

He said the people of Delhi were fed up with the bad governance provided by Congress and the election results showed that they have realised the mistake they made by voting for the party in the earlier polls.

Attacking the Congress over the new Master Plan that was finalised in the run-up to the MCD polls, Vardhan said it was an "election-oriented plan" formulated to "fool the
people."

"The claims made by Ajay Maken that the Master Plan would solve the problems faced by the Delhiites have fallen flat on their face. The Master Plan is under the scrutiny of
the court and the amicus curiae has criticised the plan for ignoring basic amenities," he said.

He said the people of Delhi had expressed their anger over issues such as water and power shortages, inflation, higher taxes and pollution in the Yamuna by voting to bring
the BJP back to power.

Asked who would be the next Mayor, he said the decision would be made soon after discussions.

Vardhan promised a "people-friendly"  in the MCD under his party, stating that it would also be a transparent, clean and corruption-free regime.
