NEW DELHI: A non-resident Indian, who allegedly killed his estranged wife at her US home on Thursday, was arrested at Delhi airport on Saturday in response to a red-corner alert.

Avtaar Singh Grewal, 30, was asked to step aside at the airport’s immigration counter after authorities found him listed in a lookout notice.

“We arrested him late on Saturday night and he has been kept in judicial custody,” said PN Suri, assistant commissioner of police. “There was no resistance whatsoever from the subject. A lookout notice was issued by the US authorities who suspect that he murdered his wife. A team will come from the US to question him.”

Grewal and Kaur were apparently contemplating divorce and lived separately. Kaur resided in Phoenix, Arizona, and Grewal in Canada. When Kaur didn’t show up for work on Friday morning, her co-workers went to look for her. They called police when they found blood and signs of a struggle. Investigators later found Kaur’s body.

The Phoenix police have not yet released details of how she was killed but say they have ‘an initial idea’. There are also reports that Grewal was suicidal and that the Phoenix police have found definitive proof of his involvement in Kaur’s murder.
