JERUSALEM: As part of its humanatarian projects, the Indian contingent in the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has organised a series of multi-speciality medical clinics in southern Lebanon to help the war battered locals.

“It was realised that the population did not have easy access to specialist doctors. Our Commanding Officer and a team of doctors interacted with officials from two local NGO’s and we decided to set up medical clinics in our area of operation”, spokeman of the Indian contingent Major Sumit Sharma said.

The medical clinics attracted almost 300 patients in two days, he said.  Among other humanitarian tasks, the Indian contingent is also providing ‘Jaipur foot’ to victims of mine and cluster bombs in the region.

“Some 22 people from South Lebanon, who had lost their limbs due to injuries sustained during mine and cluster bomb incidents, have already benefitted from the low cost technological wonder”, Sharma noted.

“All our humanitarian activities are being carried out as part of duties under the UN mandate”, he said. The current Indian contingent, the 15th Punjab Infantry Battalion Group, which joined the UNIFIL in December, has also contacted the concerned doctors in Jaipur and they are expected to visit Lebanon next month.

“A core group of officers in the battalion have been asked to compile a database of locals who may need information about Jaipur Foot,” the spokesman said.

The Indian contingent has also approached the Lebanese Army in order to extend the scope of the project to their organisation.

It has also plans proposed to UNIFIL to build a water supply system for Bourhoz village.      The Indian contingent has recently inaugurated an spoken English centre at Kafer Chauba High School and provided instructors from the battalion.

The role of the Indian contingent in UNIFIL has been highly appreciated by the UN. The previous battalion, the 4 Sikh Regiment, was awarded the Force Commander’s Unit Citation and 73 officers and soldiers of the battalion were awarded the Force Commander’s Commendation Card in recognition of their good work done during the war in southern Lebanon.

Former UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan, had personally visited the battalion to inspect the humanitarian work carried out by it during his trip to Lebanon following the war.
