NEW DELHI: In a crucial judgment in the 1984 anti-Sikh riot case, a Delhi court on Monday convicted three people on charges of killing three members of a family, including a Delhi Police head constable, on the ill-fated day when riots broke out in the Capital after the assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

Head constable Niranjan Singh, who was on duty at a railway station in east Delhi, was hunted down by a mob before being killed in front of his house. The mob then went on to kill his 17-year-old son Maninder Singh and son-in-law Gurpal Singh. The court will announce the quantum of punishment on March 28.

The Delhi court found the three accused, Harparsad Bhardwaj, R P Tiwari and Jagdish Giri, guilty of killing three members of Nirnajan Singh’s family. Though a total of five people were named in the cases, a woman, Kamlesh and Suraj Giri were let off by the court for lack of evidence against them.

The FIR in the case was filed by Harminder Kaur in 1996 when the government had constituted the Jain and Banerjee Committee to look into the anti-Sikh riot cases. More than 300 men, women and children were massacred by mobs in the aftermath of the Indira Gandhi assassination. The fall out was allegedly instigated by Congress leaders.

The Nanavati Commission, which was constituted in 2000, had found Congress leaders Sajjan Kumar, Jagdish Tytler and HKL Bhagat guilty of instigating mob and of being personally present in the areas where riots broke out. The judgment came nearly two years after the Centre had announced a compensation package of Rs 715 crore for the relief and rehabilitation of the families affected during the riots.

Earlier this year, the Delhi High Court had granted bail to Congress MP Sajjan Kumar and six others in connection with a 1984 anti-Sikh riot case. Congress parliamentarian HKL Bhagat was also granted bail in the case.
