UAE Prime Minister begins visit to India

Shaikh Mohammed, also Ruler of Dubai, who took over as UAE prime minister in January 2006 last visited India in 1974.

DUBAI: Marking a new beginning in India-UAE ties, several economic and bilateral accords are expected to be signed during Vice-President and Prime Minister of the Gulf country Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum's two-day visit to the country which begins on Sunday.

Shaikh Mohammed, also Ruler of Dubai, who took over as UAE prime minister in January 2006 last visited India in 1974 as the UAE Defence Minister accompanying his father, the late Shaikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum.

Sheikh Mohammed, accompanied by seven ministers and a high-level business delegation, is visiting India on the invitation of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

During the visit, the two countries are expected to sign a double taxation protocol though a double taxation agreement already exists between the two countries.

A visa avoidance agreement on government officials and diplomats holding passports of either of the two countries will also be signed to facilitate their visits.

The agreements on customs cooperation, exchange of prisoners between the two countries (an extradition agreement already exists), on combating international terrorism, money laundering and other crimes are also on the table.

"I am confident that Shaikh Mohammed's first state visit to India will provide a unique opportunity to inform its public about the UAE and our long-standing bonds with Emiratis," CM Bhandari, Indian ambassador to the UAE, said.

Abdullah Ibrahim Al-Shehhi, the UAE envoy to India, has described the visit as a historic one which reflects the strong desire by the two countries and their people in the consolidation of the mutual cooperation and understanding.

Shaikh Mohammad would call on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and President  APJ Abdul Kalam.
