It's belated but finally the international hockey federation (FIH) is acknowledging that India is central to the health of the game. Since the last few months, the FIH has announced several policies in support of Indian hockey.

On Wednesday, the FIH executive board took a decision to approach the Indian Hockey Confederation (IHC) to find out whether India can host the 2010 World Cup in New Delhi. The last time India hosted the World Cup was in 1982 in Mumbai but of late the FIH is exploring the possibilities of conducting more big tournaments in India for financial reasons.

FIH's press officer, Arjen Meijer told DNA, "A proposal is being sent to the IHC and it is hoped that a decision can be taken within a month." He also added that Delhi has been selected as a venue to host the next FIH executive board meeting later in November.

The FIH board has allotted the 2010 women's World Cup to Argentina. The men's host is expected to be finalised later this month, Last weekend, the FIH executive members had met in Lausanne (Switzerland) to discuss the host for the next World Cups.

Meijer said during the meeting the Board members expressed their happiness with the substantial progress made in 'Promoting Indian Hockey' project of the FIH led by Bob Davidson in cooperation with the IHC, the Indian Olympic Association and Olympic Solidarity (IOC).

The executive board also decided to give more support to the Continental Federations (CF's). The CF's will receive a higher administration grant of the FIH in order to improve the efficiency of its administration based upon certain conditions to fulfil.

Another issue discussed at the meeting was the completion of the World Hockey Umpiring Boost (WHUB), an FIH project, jointly organized by the Umpiring Committee and the Development and Coaching Committee.

The overall objective was to assist as many National Associations as possible to encourage, promote and develop Umpiring in their own country.

In future, the FIH will take a much more active part in the organization of FIH tournaments, including the World Cups, to assist hosts to achieve the objectives of maximizing the marketing and development of the sport while at the same time producing the best playing conditions for the athletes.
