In a latest revelation, it has been found that Woolmer had met Delhi Police Commissioner KK Paul, the man who cracked the Hanse Cronje matchfixing case.
NEW DELHI: With speculation rife about the mysterious death of Bob Woolmer, a new lead into the late Pakistan coach’s antecedents could help cops crack the murder case. In a latest revelation, it has been found that Woolmer had met Delhi Police Commissioner KK Paul, the man who cracked the Hanse Cronje matchfixing case.
It happened during the Indo-Pak series in March 2005 and was an unusual diversion from the itinerary. It went almost unnoticed at that time, save for a picture in the newspapers. But in the light of recent developments, the meeting may have some significance.
The duo met at Paul’s residence the day after the Indo-Pak ODI in New Delhi. During their hour-long conversation, Woolmer fired several questions about the investigations into the matchfixing scandal and apparently shared some surprising revelations about the cricketing establishment with which he was currently associated.
What he said about Pakistan cricket has gone with Woolmer to his grave, for Paul declined to comment when DNA contacted him. The only other person present at that meeting was a sports writer.
According to information from other sources, Woolmer was particularly interested in the mechanics of matchfixing and the manner in which Delhi Police got to the bottom of Cronje’s involvement.
Woolmer was apparently quite upset about the scandal because he was the South African team’s coach during the time Cronje hooked up with bookies and also because he had nurtured and developed the cricketer.
It’s not known whether he feared that history was repeating itself but Woolmer is believed to have told people around him that he intended to write a book which would expose, among other things, the role matchfixing has played in international cricket.
