NEW DELHI: It’s an end of the road for Babu Bajrangi, the notorious Bajrang Dal activist, accused in the Narodia Patia massacre in Gujarat five years back.

Bajrangi, who became infamous for kidnapping inter-caste couples, came under legal net as the Supreme Court on Monday issued notices to the Gujarat and Maharashtra governments.

The apex court swung into action following a joint petition filed by four boys who were separated from their spouses by the Bajrang Dal activist.

Ajay Nikam, Raju Medige, Abhijeet Sonawane and Prashant Samudre recently suffered a setback when the Bombay High Court rejected their pleas for uniting them with their legally-wedded wives.

Bajrangi runs a self-styled NGO ‘Nav Chetan Trust’ that forcibly separates girls who marry outside their caste.

The high court also ignored the report of its own inquiry committee that had recommended registration of FIRs against Bajrangi and his associates.

The petition comes at a time when the Delhi High Court Justice Shiv Narayan Dhingra quashed a criminal complaint lodged against a Hindu boy and a Muslim girl who had been in hiding ever since an eyewitness to their marriage had been arrested.

“There is no law which prohibits a girl less than 18 years from falling in love with someone else. Falling in love with somebody is not an offence under the Indian Penal Code (IPC),” said Justice Dhingra.

He also expressed shock at media revelations about police high-handedness and societal violence against people falling in love.

“We beat up a Muslim boy so badly a few days back that no Muslim will ever dare to look at any Hindu woman again. We made him eat his own waste three times with a spoon,” Bajrangi had allegedly said.
