KINGSTON (JAMAICA): Following are the statistical highlights of the first match of the cricket World Cup between West Indies and Pakistan.

The West Indies-Pakistan encounter was the 1000th ODI of the decade. India (218) have played the most number of matches during this period, followed by Pakistan (211), Australia (205) and Sri Lanka (200).

Both the captains, Brian Lara and Inzamam-ul-Haq, had over 10,000 runs to their individual credit, which happened for the first time in Limited-Overs Internationals.

West Indies' 54-run win is their 32nd in 49 matches in the World Cup (Lost 16, No Result 1). The said win is West Indies' sixth in 8 games against Pakistan in World Cup (lost 2).

Pakistan, in 54 World Cup games, have lost 23 and won 29 while two could not produce results.

Pakistan's last win over a Test-playing country in a World Cup game was against New Zealand by 9 wickets on 16.6.1999 at Old Trafford. In the 2002-03 World Cup edition, their only two wins were against Namibia at Kimberley on 16th

February and by 97 runs against the Netherlands at Paarl on 25th February.

Pakistan have lost 7 World Cup games out of 10 when they have put the opponents in.

Pakistan's 187 is their lowest completed innings total against West Indies in the World Cup.

Chris Gayle became the first and only batsman to face the very first ball of the Cricket World Cup on two occasions.

In the 2002-03 edition of the World Cup, he had faced the first ball off Shaun Pollock (South Africa) at Cape Town on February 9.

Kamran Akmal, with 4 dismissals (3 ct.+1 st.) became the third Pakistani wicketkeeper to have effected 4 or more dismissals in an innings in World Cup, joining Rashid Latif (5 vs. New Zealand at Lahore on 6.3.1996) and Wasim Bari (4 vs. New Zealand at Edgbaston on 11.6.1983).

Ramnaresh Sarwan (49 off 65 balls) took his aggregate to 258 in six World Cup innings.  His batting average of 86.00 is the best by any West Indian in World Cup.

Sarwan's 49 is his second best score in the World Cup - his highest is 75 off 99 balls against New Zealand at Port Elizabeth on 13.2.2003.

Gayle (2) registered his fourth single digit score in succession. In his previous three innings, he had made 5 at Cuttack; 0 at Chennai and 6 at Vadodara - all against India.

Gayle, in his last 7 innings, has now six single digit scores.

Gayle averages only 25.96 against Pakistan in ODIs, which is well below his career average of 38.50.

Sarwan and Chanderpaul added 57 runs for the second wicket and missed surpassing the West Indian record against Pakistan in the World Cup - the best is 65 between Desmond Haynes and Richie Richardson at Karachi in 1987-88.

Marlon Samuels (63) recorded his maiden fifty in the World Cup -  eclipsing his previous best of 14 against Kenya at Kimberley on 4.3.2003.

Samuels' 63 off 70 balls is his first fifty against Pakistan (13th in ODIs)- his second best score against Pakistan, next only to his 100 not out at Multan on 13.12.2006.

Samuels top-scored in the match but his 63 is the lowest individual score in an inaugural game in any World Cup edition.

In the inaugural game between England and Sri Lanka at Lord's in the 1999 World Cup edition, Alec Stewart had top-scored with 88. The 1999 and 2006-07 editions provide the o nly instances when the inaugural games have failed to produce a hundred.

Samuels and Brian Lara put on 91 runs for the fourth wicket, which is a West Indian record against Pakistan in the World Cup, obliterating the 48 between Rohan Kanhai and Clive Lloyd at Edgbaston on 11.6.1975.

Dwayne Smith (32 off 15 balls) batted with a strike rate of 213.33 and thanks to  his innings on Tuesday, his career strike rate is now over 100 (101.07) - 749 in 49 innings at an average of 15.93.

Smith (3/36) registered his best bowling figures against Pakistan, surpassing his 2 for 29 at Multan on 13.12.2006.

Smith got his third Man of the Match award for his all-round performance.

Bravo (3/42) produced his best bowling figures against Pakistan, eclipsing his 2 for 39 at Adelaide on 28.1.2005.

Iftikhar Anjum (3/44) has produced his career-best bowling figures, eclipsing his 2 for 13 against Sri Lanka at Colombo, RPS on 19.3.2006.

Shoaib Malik (62 off 54 balls) on his World Cup debut, posted his 21st fifty in ODIs - his third against West Indies.

With his lbw dismissal, his 39th, Inzamam-ul-Haq has emulated Sri Lanka's Sanath Jayasuriya's feat of 39 lbw dismissals in ODIs.
