He said he feared he would be killed within the UP Vidhan Sabha premises. He charged the BJP chief with patronising the hardened criminals who were after his life.
The state government has ordered an inquiry into the matter by the Special Task Force (STF) of the UP police while the BJP has rubbished the charge terming it facetious and politically motivated.
Mukhtar Ansari, who is accused in several criminal cases himself, supports the Mulayam Singh government in the UP Assembly. He has been in jail for over a year for the murder of BJP MLC Krishnanand Rai in November 2005.
“Rajnath Singh would be responsible if I am killed in a shootout,” Mukhtar Ansari told reporters. Earlier, he had raised the matter in the Vidhan Sabha. He alleged Additional DG of UP Police, VK Singh, and Varanasi district police chief, Sujit Pande, were also part of the plot to eliminate him.
Talking to DNA, Mukhtar gave the matter a curious twist, linking it to the CBI probe against Mulayam in the disproportionate assets case. “The CBI is inquiring into Mulayam Singh’s assets. Why doesn’t it investigate how Rajnath Singh, who used to ride a borrowed bicycle, has accumulated wealth of over a thousand crore rupees? It’s because he has criminals on his payroll,” he told this correspondent.
Mukhtar also named senior BJP leader Surya Pratap Shahi saying he was supporting criminals who were after his life.
He also said BJP leaders were patronising mafia don Brijesh Singh whose gang had mounted murderous attacks against him a number of times.
The BJP has junked Mukhtar’s charges. “Mukhtar himself is a hardened criminal and other people fear for their lives from him. He is making these ridiculous charges only to get additional security cover,” senior BJP leader Lalji Tandon told DNA. However, he could not explain why Mukhtar would need additional security when he is behind bars.
Legislative Affairs Minister Azam Khan told the Assembly that the government would get the matter investigated by the STF and steps would be taken to ensure Mukhtar’s security when he was brought to the Vidhan Sabha or taken to the court for hearing from jail.
