JAMSHEDPUR: The body of slain Jharkhand Mukti Morcha MP Sunil Mahato was taken to his village in Saraikela-Kharasawan district and the funeral would take place on Tuesday evening.
Deputy Chief Minister Sudhir Mahato said the body of Mahato was taken from the Tata Main hospital morgue to his Chotagamariya residence in Saraikela-Kharasawan district on Tuesday morning.
He said after performing rituals at the residence of the slain leader, the cortege would be taken to various places in the steel city.
The body would be kept at Gopal Maidan in Bistupur for about two hours for the public to pay homage to the departed leader, Mahato said.
The body will be taken to the tomb of slain JMM president Nirmal Mahato in Uliyan. The funeral procession will pass through Kadma and the body will be kept at Beldit Church to enable the Christian community to pay homage.
The funeral will be performed with full state honour at 4 pm near the residence of the slain leader.
The Deputy Chief Minister also allayed apprehension about any violence in the state during the funeral. "A shock wave was sweeping across the state following the death of the emerging party leader and people have spontaneously shut down their business establishments and shut markets," he said.
Sudhir said Mahato had fostered good relations with senior political party leaders besides, UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee within a short span.
He said despite being a first time MP, Mahato managed to draw attention of the government to several pressing social issues.
