NEW DELHI: Ever since the Supreme Court ordered the CBI to probe the assets of Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mulayam Singh Yadav and his family, Amar Singh has sparked furore about an audio CD claiming to ‘expose the Congress conspiracy’ behind the PIL against the Samajwadi Party supremo.

According to Singh, the petitioner Vishwanath Chaturvedi is a Congress “crony” and that he has been trying to influence the judiciary (read Supreme Court judges).

Sigh held a press conference with Jaya Bachchan, Jaya Prada, Akilesh Yadav and three other senior party leaders on March 1 and distributed the CD to reporters.

In a bid to enlist political support for the beleaguered UP chief minister, Amar Singh on Monday called on CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat and handed over the CD to him.

According to party sources, Mulayam Singh and Amar Singh will call on President A P J Abdul Kalam, Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekawat and Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee to weigh the contents of the CD.

While the BJP demanded a judicial probe instead of a CBI inquiry, the CPI(M) is yet to come to a conclusion.

Karat confirmed receiving the CD, but did not say whether he agreed with Amar Singh’s contention. “I promise to look into the issue,” he said.

The CD, purportedly, contains a conversation between a reporter of a private television channel and Vishwanath Chaturvedi, the petitioner against the SP chief. The person, said to be Chaturvedi, is heard bragging about his links with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi.

According to Singh, Chaturvedi is a Congress party worker and he misled the court by concealing his identity. Chaturvedi, in his alleged conversation with the journalist, also talks about offering a suitable job to the judge after retirement.
