Swords may soon be out against Narayan Rane in his own turf, Sindhudurg, what with the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) showing a clear interest in aligning with the Shiv Sena at the local level in the region.

Although the party wants the alliance decision to be taken on the local level, it will have no objection if local leaders decide to go with their traditional rival Shiv Sena in order to set the record straight. Identifying the Congress as its immediate enemy, NCP General Secretary Gurunath Kulkarni, said, “Rane has humiliated us enough.  The equations in this particular district are entirely different, which is why we have chosen to keep our principles aside.”

As was the case with the Municipal Corporation’s elections held last month, Nationalist Congress and Congress have failed to forge an alliance for the Zilla Parishad (ZP) and Panchayat Samiti (PS) elections slated for the coming week. Talks between the local leaders from both parties in most of the districts and talukas have failed. “We are yet to get complete information, but in some districts we have an alliance while in few others it’s partial,” said Arun Gujrati, state chief of NCP.

“We don’t have an alliance in Nagpur, Yavatmal, Nashik, Thane, Raigad, Pune, Sangli and Satara, whereas in districts like Jalgoan, Buldhana, Ratnagiri we are going together in some tehsils only,” said Kulkarni.

NCP, in its manifesto for Zilla and Panchayat polls released on Friday, talks about various reforms but comfortably leaves out the issues related to the suicides of debt-ridden farmers and load shedding problem that the region is afflicted with.
