The DB Marg police on Friday arrested a 25-year-old drug addict in connection with the murder of a young man in South Mumbai on Sunday, last week. The police suspect his involvement in stabbing a 20-year-old migrant on March 1.

The accused, Mohammed Salaam Shaikh, was arrested from the Marine Lines area on Friday night and produced before the Magistrate’s court, which remanded him in police custody till March 13.

The police are, however, tight-lipped in his alleged connection with the serial murders case.

“We have made several detentions following the murder and arrested Shaikh following some leads that came out during interrogations,” Additional Commissioner of Police (South Region) D Kanakratnam said.

According to Kanakratnam, Shaikh is a native of West Bengal and had been staying on South Mumbai streets for the last seven years. When asked if Shaikh knew the alleged serial killer Ravindra Kantrole or about his motive, Kanakratnam said, “We cannot reveal anything as investigations are underway.”

Following the discovery of the young man’s body on Grant Road on February 25, the police which had formed a special investigation team to investigate into at least seven instances of unsolved murders in South Mumbai in similar circumstances, alleged that some accomplices of Kantrole could be involved in the case.

The decomposing body of the youngster was found bearing multiple stab wounds on his chest and a head injury.

On Wednesday, March 1, Rajiv Gupta, a migrant from Uttar Pradesh was allegedly attacked by an unidentified person several times near Grant Road. The incident had further fuelled suspicions about the “serial killer’ being at large.

Rafiq Shaikh alias Salaam, a street dweller, has been arrested in connection with Wednesday’s murder attempt near Mumbai Central station. The victim, Gupta, who is recuperating in Nair hospital, identified him when he was brought in front of Gupta.

Shaikh allegedly accosted Gupta, who had come to the city some days ago in search of employment, at Chattrapati Shivaji Terminus on Wednesday night and promised him a job. He then took Gupta for dinner to a dargah near Bombay Hospital and escorted him to Mumbai Central station. He then stabbed him in the stomach. Gupta was then taken to the Nair hospital and is reportedly out of danger.

Police sources believe the man could be the serial killer, as his modus operandi at the Mumbai Central incident was similar to the other murders allegedly committed by Ravindra Kantrole, which have taken place near stations in South Mumbai.

However, it is still not clear whether Shaikh is associated with Kantrole, said the police.
