KOLKATA: The Prime Minister’s national chief security advisor, MK Narayanan, has cautioned the West Bengal government about its huge coastline being extensively used by Bangladeshi terrorist groups to permeate trained guerrillas and sophisticated arms to India.

Narayanan’s caution is based on a report of the security system along Indian coastlines, which was submitted by the National Security Council in the first week of February.

The report, prepared by the central intelligence agency, Research & Analytical Wing (RAW), mentions the fragile security system along the West Bengal coastline, a majority of which flows through the dense forests of Sunderbans.

In his report forwarded to the WB home department, Narayanan, mentioned that trained guerrillas and sophisticated arms are being transported via fishing trawlers, passenger boats and small goods ships. It was also mentioned that in many cases the guerrillas take shelter in the uninhabited forest islands in Sunderbans.

A senior officer from the West Bengal home department said that the state government has been advised to make arrangement on an emergency basis so that automatic identification transponders are installed in all the water-vessels plying along the West Bengal coastline.

It is further learnt that the state government on is also taking steps to step up the monitoring process on its coastline. “Shortly six additional police stations with additional police personnel would also be deployed and they would be provided with sophisticated equipments to ensure an efficient monitoring system,” a state government official said.
