DUBAI: Over 400 labourers, mainly Indians, stopped rush hour traffic on Dubai's main highway during a protest over wages.

The construction workers stopped work for more than two hours on Wednesday morning, demanding a Dh2 increase in their Dh25 daily wages.

Workers started their protest around 8 am, said Lieutenant Riyad Al Shafi, representative of Dubai Police Human Rights Department.

The protestors claimed their Dh500 per month salary was not enough to meet their expenses, and even this salary was often delayed. They also complained that the labour camp they were living in was cramped.

Police moved the workers away from the main road and contacted the Dubai Member of the Permanent Committee for Labour Affairs to take necessary measures.

The protestors dispersed after officials asked the workers to choose five persons as representatives to discuss the issue with both the company and the authorities.

Officials of the Indian Consulate in Dubai said they had contacted the authorities to sort out the matter. A team from the Consulate also visited the disgruntled workers.
