The 21-year-old young man found dead by the railway tracks near Grant Road station on Sunday may have been actually murdered near an apartment at DB Marg, the police said on Tuesday.
The police had earlier registered an accidental death case. But after the new development, a murder case has been lodged. “Blood stains found on the 10-ft wall adjacent to the railway tracks and a housing society near DB Marg point to the possibility that the assailant(s) murdered him and then threw him onto the tracks,” senior police inspector Dipak Bagwe at Churchgate Railway police station told DNA. The Railway Police also questioned the residents of Hansraj Building with regard to the incident.
“An elderly couple told us during the inquiry that they heard a man crying loud a day before the body was found dead. But when they went out searching, the assailants had already fled the spot,” said a railway police officer. The police have intensified patrolling between Churchgate and Grant Road stations as all murders were committed between the stretch. Meanwhile, the post-mortem report confirmed that he had been stabbed to death. The Railway police have now transferred the case to the DB Marg police station for further investigations.
“We have taken the case from Railway police and are now investigating the matter,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Zone II, Pratap Dighawkar. Though many drug addicts in the stretch have been picked up for questioning, the police are yet to get any vital clues.
Meanwhile, the police are now on the look-out for two of the accomplices of the alleged serial killer, Ravindra Kantrole, for their suspected involvement in the killings. Kantrole is now under the custody of the Marine Drive police for his involvement in the murder of a young man whose body was found near Hockey Stadium at Churchgate on October 9.
