Panic again grips the area around the RSS headquarters in Nagpur, which was the target of a terrorist attack last year.
NAGPUR: Nearly 29 rounds were fired from a carbine’s magazine sending panic waves in and around the RSS headquarters and a police constable was injured on Monday night.
The perpetrators of this large-scale havoc were none other than — hold your breath — mosquitoes.
It was nearly an hour-and-a-half past midnight when constable Anand Jajurle, who was on security duty near the RSS headquarters, woke up with a start only to find his tent on fire.
Holding fort for the night to guard the building, Jajurle had lit a mosquito coil to save himself from the menacing parasites.
But, Jajurle dozed off while on duty in the very tent, which is on a watch tower overseeing the RSS building.
It was the fire that woke him up. A shocked and confused Jajurle decided to jump from the tent, nearly 15 metres high from the ground, and resultantly broke his leg.
But in the melee, he forgot his fully-loaded carbine in the tent, which set off the 29 rounds of fire, spreading panic in the entire area.
The confusion was resolved and the situation was brought under control after nearly an hour. Fire tenders rushed the spot within minutes and doused the fire.
The incident brought back memories of the attack on the RSS headquarters which took place in May last year. “People feared the RSS building was under attack once again,” said a constable, who was also on the spot when the incident took place.
The neighbours heaved a sigh of relief when the truth came to light.
As for Jajurle, he is recuperating in the Government Medical College and Hospital. He has been suspended by the Nagpur police with immediate effect.
He would have just been stung by a couple of mosquitoes instead.
