The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education on Tuesday rescheduled 11 of the HSC and SSC examinations because of elections to the district and village councils on March 11. The examinations will now be conducted between March 14 and March 29.

The changes were made after a petition filed before the Aurangabad bench of the Bombay High Court argued that the polls will have an adverse impact on students appearing for the exams. The court directed the State Election Commission (SEC) and the education board to find a solution to the issue, but the SEC said it could not postpone the elections as it had to conduct polls before the tenure of the existing civic bodies expires on March 20, 2007.

The Secondary School Certificate (SSC) students have welcomed the decision while the HSC students are unhappy. SSC students said the delay would give them time to prepare. But disgruntled HSC aspirants — sweating it out for the professional courses —felt the new timetable would hamper their preparations for entrance exams for medical and engineering colleges, which are likely to take place in May.

“We prepare the timetable for the entrance exams before the commencement of the HSC exams. However, the postponement has disturbed our study pattern,” said Tanvi Satpute, an HSC aspirant. “With the new timetable, there will be a 15-day gap between our second-last paper and the last paper. We’ve got 15 days to prepare for the last paper, which is termed the easiest subject. The government is playing with our future,” said Pooja of Ruparel College.
