Six Nigerian nationals were arrested by the Juhu police, on Friday for duping an Orissa resident by promising him a job in a five star hotel in London.
The arrested Nigerians identified as Vincent Majeck, 26, Agobol Tony, 26, Kowni Okosan, 34, Amosh Isait, 36, Charles Nioga and Aodiram Babatude Alex, 26, were residing in an apartment at Mira Road.
Senior PI Pradeep Shinde of Juhu police told DNA, “Prabhatkumar Singh, 31, of Orissa, received an e-mail on December 12, stating that there were vacancies in London-based hotels and asked interested candidates to submit their bio-data. The applicants were promised an attractive pay package.”
Shinde added that after receiving the offer, Singh contacted the e-mailer. The e-mailer then sent him the mobile number of a Mumbai-based person named Terry. The e-mailer informed Singh that Terry was an employee of the UK High Commission. Singh then contacted Terry on the said mobile number.
Terry gave Singh six different bank account numbers through SMSes and asked him to pay Rs1.17 lakh as processing fee, which Singh paid from a bank in Orissa. The account numbers where Singh transferred the money were from Mumbai.
“Early this month, Singh contacted the UK High Commission office and was shocked to learn that no person named Terry was working with them. Singh then decided to come to Mumbai and on February 15 approached the Cyber Crime Cell (CCC) in the city,” said Shinde.
The CCC then told Juhu police about the case, since some of the banks where Singh had transferred the money fall under the jurisdiction of Juhu police station. The Juhu police then approached the banks and managed to trace 2 of the 6 account holders — Faisal Khan, resident of Kurla and Mohammad Hadim, resident of Mira Road.
