Sensing public resentment against government over the increased load-shedding, the Congress on Tuesday decided to hold its ally Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) responsible for the power crisis. The Congress leaders at a meeting decided to highlight the failures of NCP in the Power Ministry and the Home Ministry in the zilla parishad elections.

A party committee is in the process of fine-tuning the manifesto. As the Congress is not going for any electoral alliance with the NCP in zilla parishad polls, it has been decided to turn the tables on the party for shortcomings in the Power Ministry held by Dilip Walse-Patil. The Congress leaders now argue that the NCP minister should have taken initiatives to ensure that the power projects were functioning to its optimum capacity.

A party general secretary, who participated in the meeting, said: “There was unanimous demand that the Congress will have to effectively market the NCP failures on power front if it wants to win the confidence of people in rural Maharashtra.”

It was also decided that to negate the public anger, the party will also have to come out with long-term plans to impress upon voters on power, agriculture, education and irrigation sectors.  The Congress is going to highlight the failures of the Shiv Sena-BJP regime between 1995 and 2000 that resulted in the state going bankrupt.

Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh has been told to list out achievements and initiatives taken by the Congress leaders in the state and the Centre. The Congress Parliamentary Party also began discussions on the poll strategies for the zilla parishad polls. Revenue Minister Narayan Rane, Union Power Minister Sushilkumar Shinde, former MPCC chief Shivajirao Deshmukh were included in the highest decision- making body.
