SRINAGAR: Three days after the Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK) government offered to supply cooking gas and energy to the state, the Jammu and Kashmir government said they were not averse to the idea provided the Centre approves the deal.

“We will welcome the supply of cooking gas to the state provided the Central Government gives its go ahead. The issue does not come under our ambit”, Taj Mohi-ud-din, J&K minister for consumer affairs and public distribution, told DNA.

The reaction comes after the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), an important partner in the ruling coalition, mounted pressure on the government asking them to “grab the opportunity and allow the project to take off”.

“It is a bold and visionary statement which needs to be responded positively by the Centre and the state government”, said Mehbooba Mufti, PDP president. “Such measures would lay a strong foundation for joint institutional mechanism between the two parts of the state setting the basis for the peace and prosperity in the region”, she said

She also called for constituting a consultative committee comprising legislators and experts from both sides of the state to work-out modalities for implementation of these measures.

Kashmir Inc. has also come in open support of this move saying it will give a fillip to fledgling economy of the state.

“We experience shortage of cooking gas in the state, particularly in winters. Our highways often close during winters which hamper the supply. We cannot run our industries continuously because people cannot work in cold conditions. We need central heating system to have three shifts in our industries to increase our productivity,” said Dr Mubeen Shah, president of Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
