KOLKATA: Congress members of Parliament are shooting off letters to Ratan Tata seeking projects in their own constituencies in West Bengal, even though most of them are predominantly agriculture-based.

Abu Hasem Khan Chowdhury, Congress MP from Malda, was the first one to write to the Tata Group chairman inviting investment in his constituency.

According to Chowdhury, if the Tata Group sets up an industrial unit in Malda, the entire district will benefit economically. “I wrote to Mr Tata and he replied expressing satisfaction over my invitation to set up any unit in Malda and promising to discuss the matter with me shortly,” Chowdhury said.

Chowdhury’s sister Ruby Nur, who is the Congress MLA from the Sujapur assembly constituency in Malda, shares the same sentiment as West Bengal CM, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, that upliftment from agriculture to industry is the need of the hour. “We know that Malda is an agriculture-dependent district, but we also need industry for overall economic development of the state,” Nur said.

It is learnt that that the Congress MP from Murshidabad, Manna Hussain, will also write a letter to the Tata Group chairman, with a similar appeal.

Meanwhile, the Congress state committee in West Bengal is not willing to take responsibility for leaders like Subrata Mukherjee getting involved with the anti-Singur movement. The general secretary of the West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee, Manas Bhuiyan said, “These are Mukherjee's personal affairs and the Congress as a party is in no way involved with this. We also do not support the anti-democratic and violent protests undertaken by the agitators on this issue. We welcome the Tatas’ project in West Bengal.”
