NANDIGRAM: The mutilated body of district police intelligence officer Sadhu Chatterjee was found in a sack on the bank of Haldi river at Narghat, near Nandigram, four days after he was killed in a mob attack.

Superintendent of Police Ashok Dutta said the District Intelligence Bureau sub-inspector's body was found at around 10:30 am and had knife injuries on the head and left hand and his stomach was slashed open.

Chatterjee's body was identified by his uncle by the sweater he was wearing, Dutta said.

The body was sent for post mortem, he said.

Chatterjee was attacked and killed last Wednesday at Ishwardehajalpai when he accompanied the police to an area where roads were being dug up by people to prevent forces from entering their villages.

East Midnapore district has witnessed violent protests by villagers since early January following rumours that large areas of farmland would be acquired for setting up a SEZ by Indonesia's Salim group. Six persons had been killed in violence on January seven at Nandigram.

Meanwhile, the Bhumi Uchhed Pratirodh Committee claimed that the men in villages had fled their homes in fear of the CPI (M) and police.
