SUMBAL/BARAMULLA: An abandoned grave has suddenly become a center of attraction here. Armed policemen stand guard at the grave which just a month ago was viewed as one among hundreds belonging to unclaimed foreign jihadis killed by the security forces in different encounters.

But the truth is out finally. In this grave lies the body of Abdul Rehman Padder who was killed by the security forces and later branded as militant. “On that day the cops asked us to bury the body of a militant in our graveyard. They said the slain was a militant killed in an encounter at nearby Waskora”, said Mohammad Maqbool, a local.

Shock and awe descended on this village after it was known that the person buried was a civilian who was picked up by the police from Batamaloo bus stand on December 8 and killed in a fake encounter.

“We have given orders for exhuming the body for DNA tests. We are waiting for the central team to collect the samples”, said Basharat Ahmad Dhar, divisional commissioner Kashmir.

Police have already gone into a proactive mode and arrested two persons and attached two others including SSP Ganderbal and DSP (operations). Police have also recovered three bank passports and luxury vehicle from one of the arrested assistant sub inspector Farooq Ahmad Gudoo. Heavy deployment of cops has also been made at the graveyard to prevent people from tampering with the evidence.

“We have placed men to guard the grave and preserve the evidence. A team is coming from Chandigarh to collect DNA samples. Investigations are on in full swing.” said SM Sahai, IGP Kashmir. In fact the case has opened a Pandora ‘s Box in Kashmir. Two similar cases are also being probed by the police and there is likelihood that some more persons will be arrested.
