BEIJING: Beijing has warned government and Olympic officials not to shame the country during the 2008 Games through corruption or immoral behaviour, state media reported on Monday.

"Officials must not be dissipated by wine and women, and should not visit entertainment venues after work," the China Daily quoted Liu Qi, Beijing Communist Party chief and president of the Beijing Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (BOCOG), as saying.

City authorities are auditing Olympic-related projects and monitoring officials 'lifestyles' to insure a clean and transparent Olympics, the newspaper said.

Last year, prosecutors launched criminal proceedings against former Beijing vice-mayor Liu Zhihua, who was suspected of taking millions of yuan in bribes while in charge of construction of Olympic venues.

Liu was also denounced as having bad morals and helping his mistress 'seek profit', the official Xinhua news agency reported following his expulsion from the Communist Party last month.

The Chinese government also sacked Du Shicheng, Party chief for Qingdao, the venue for the 2008 Olympic sailing events, for 'serious violation of discipline', Xinhua said in December.

China is in the midst of a major crackdown on official corruption, which the country's leaders say is so widespread that it could cause the ruling Communist Party's downfall.

Beijing mayor Wang Qishan, who on Saturday expressed concern about the level of courtesy and civility of the city's 15 million residents, also warned the public to prepare for the Games, the paper said. "More than 20,000 unregistered reporters and 10,000 registered ones are coming, and they are going to cover every detail of Beijing in their articles," the paper quoted Wang as saying.

"We have to have a good Olympics, otherwise not only will our generation lose face, but also our ancestors."
