When Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray was busy giving final touches to his year-and-a-half old party’s manifesto at MIG Club in Bandra, one of his trusted lieutenants was “seeking blessings” of none other than Shiv Sena Chief Bal Thackeray at ‘Matoshri’ and another key MNS leader was having “an informal chat” with a senior BJP leader at ‘Vasant Smruti’, the BJP office in Dadar.

Several political conclusions would be drawn by different political pundits, especially in light of the recent public fight between Raj Thackeray and his uncle. But one thing is for certain - the common MNS cadre would be baffled trying to figure out why their leaders were meeting leaders of parties with which they were unlikely to have even post-election alliance.

At 1.20 pm on Wednesday, MNS women wing’s president and Raj’s old friend Shweta Parulkar was seen entering ‘Matoshri’ in her silver Tata Indigo (MH04 BS1181). At 1.35 pm, she climbed to the second floor of the building, where Bal Thackeray lives. After 30 minutes, Parulkar walked out of ‘Matoshri’ in a happy mood, said an eyewitness.

At the time of Parulkar’s visit, Sena Executive President Uddhav Thackeray and wife Rashmi were not in ‘Matoshri’. They had gone to Andheri to see 80-ft rangoli portrait of Thackeray Senior. When contacted over phone, Parulkar dismissed any political connotation to the visit. She said, “I had gone to wish Balasaheb on his 80th birthday and seek his blessings. Since, there was a huge crowd on Tuesday, I decided to go on Wednesday. This is extremely personal and has nothing to do with politics, believe me.”

Two hours later, around 4 pm, another close friend of Raj, Bala Nandgaonkar, who technically continues to be a Sena MLA, went to the BJP office in Dadar to call on party’s city unit spokesperson Madhu Chavan. Nandgaonkar had a 20-minute closed-door meeting with Chavan and Atul Bhatkalkar, another senior BJP leader. But Nandgaonkar told DNA, “I had gone to Dadar for a religious function where I met Chavan. He is an old friend, and invited me to see the new BJP office. There is nothing political about it.”
